Our Staff are Super Heroes

Super heroes possess "extraordinary or superhuman powers" and are dedicated to protecting the public. Among the more than 400 people who do their work at GRMC every day, there are countless heroes.

And nothing is more powerful than a hero. They give us hope.

Community Support

Like many super heroes, GRMC has a strong supporting cast from the communities we serve. Each year, individuals from the entire five-county service area show their support for GRMC by using our facilities, volunteering their time, and donating to the medical center. This supporting cast of characters is what makes GRMC an all-star healthcare universe.

Some great super heroes have a silent partner working with them. Our volunteers are written into the script as major actors in the healthcare drama. We have more than 250 volunteers who provide more than 12,000 hours to support the medical center, including patient services volunteers, various boards and committees, gift shop volunteers, and drivers to our outreach clinics.

The Doorway to the Unknown

Some super heroes use advanced technology to solve mysteries. This year, GRMC added many advances in technology to further our goal to offer the best healthcare and conquer illness:

We already are superstars when it comes to:

H1N1

H1N1 was the public’s arch nemesis this flu season. GRMC demonstrated its super powers with vaccination clinics throughout the county. Grinnell Regional Public Health rolled out an extensive flu prevention program in schools and throughout communities to stop the spread of the H1N1 flu virus. By the end of the flu season, more than 5,676 vaccinations were given in the county, protecting nearly 30 percent of our county – an amazing accomplishment.

16th in the State

Poweshiek County ranked as the 16th healthiest county out of 99 counties for overall health outcomes. The County Health Rankings, by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, show us that where we live matters to our health. The health of a community depends on many different factors – ranging from individual health behaviors, education and jobs, to quality of health care, to the environment. In clinical care, the county ranked 14th in the state, demonstrating the county resident’s support for access and usage of health and human services.

Medical Staff

Like X-men and the Fantastic Four some super heroes work in teams. GRMC’s team of super heroes includes the nursing staff, therapists, housekeepers, kitchen staff and physicians – all working toward a common goal of quality healthcare.

In 2009, our super hero team expanded with the following medical staff members:

New Physicians
Dale Andres, DO, pathologist
Gene Gessner, MD, pain management
Christine Lindgren, DO, internal medicine
Emil Pecholt, DO, family practice
Philip Sundquist, MD, emergency medicine

Allied Health
Wendi Beck, PA, family practice
Diane Nutter, ARNP, family practice
Kenna Willey, PA, family practice

Visiting Specialists
Michael Kienzle, MD – cardiology
Allan Latcham, MD – cardiology

Community Benefit

Extraordinary powers and abilities, and advanced equipment are common tools in the super hero’s bag of secrets. At GRMC we have special powers in our toolbag, too:

The Good Guy Wins

In the comics and movies, the good guy has to win. GRMC receives feedback on patient experience surveys for both inpatients and outpatients that show we are making the world a better place. You tell us we’re doing it right. Though satisfaction is a moving target, the GRMC super hero team has always scored above the national averages and state averages for overall patient satisfaction. In 2009, GRMC was ranked the 11th best hospital in Iowa based on the national survey scores in Consumer Report’s healthcare comparison.

Even when faced with barriers of finances and physician recruitment, we still soar over expectations to protect the public and defeat illness with a caring heart and helping hand.
